The sacred cows keep getting less sacred. This gosh darn clever parody of the Broadway musical takes a sharp left turn by having its hoity-toity heroine, Liza Screwlittle (Shanna McCullough) up for a major part in a play that calls for a Bronx bimbo. The hitch is that urbane Prof. Diggins (Mike Horner) must convert the classically svelte Screwlittle to suet.
Now those of you who hold musicals in the same company as Maalox, don’t be put off. Keen, refreshing and funny, My Bare Lady relies on original music material just faithful enough to shed no doubts as to which song is being lampooned. (Horner, by the way displays a pretty strong voice and produces his best work to date as Diggins). How can you possibly fit sex into a musical? That’s where a lot of the jokes come in, particularly when the teased-up McCullough (more a parody of an adult autograph session in Vegas) and Nina Hartley, as a for –real flapper, go to town. In fact, the sex is wonderful. Terrific performances, nice packaging and a must-must see label comes with this one.
