Nikki Tyler is a private eye whose personal life is as fucked up as those of the people she shadows for a living. As we meet her, she's sleeping off a bender on her office cough. Her relationship with Jon Dough is failing miserably, although they do take time out to do a little fucking between bouts of domestic discord.

Then comes the case Nikki's been waiting for: After years of staking out sleazy hotel rooms, Tyler gets the chance to help a worried father looking for his daughter, who has disappeared amidst the bright lights of Tinseltown. There's no happy ending the missing girl, as it turns out, but there may be one for Nikki.
