Love Ed Powers or hate him? His two-part vanity project, Colors of Passion, gives you over four hallucinogenic hours of video to make up your mind. In other words, if you can't get enough of Ed from More Dirty Debutantes, this may be the feature that settles the score once and for all.
When starving artist Vaughn Von Gustoff (Jan Hedin, a dead-on Denis Leary) decides to blow his brains out over a hooker (Jenny Svensson), Powers enters the picture as a king of Borscht Belt Clarence and the angel from It's a Wonderful Life. If that were only the case; but Colors of Passion is a much more extravagant means to relatively the same end.
With 17 sex scenes, enough European haunts to fuel a year's supply of picture postcards, copious camera shots of flowers in bloom and Powers assuming Vincent Van Gogh's alter ego, this thing plays like Zazel meets Lust for Life, with touches of Woody Allen thrown in for good measure.
If you think a Jim Holliday script takes you on a tour of that director's mind, Powers, who strikes poses as if he were on a Dutch Masters cigar box, chains you to the oar for the entire voyage. Pay close attention. You'll hear enough gratuitous observations about life and art to serve fortune cookies to Genghis Khan's army. Fortunately for the sexual aesthete, pretty European girls (Monti especially) and sumptuous backsides prevail in direct proportion to the umpteen-million times Ed feels compelled to display his severed ear to the audience in a dream sequence that makes the word "repetitive" seem redundant.
Some elegant and not-so-elegant anal scenes (several of which feature Ursula Dark in a secondary role as an Italian hooker) tabulate faster than pledges in the last hour of a Jerry Lewis telethon. Which pretty much serves reason to attempt this feature. Bearing in mind, of course, that what you're witnessing has nothing to compare to it in the known porn universe.
