Reviews

The Fluffer is a mainstream release love story wrapped in a behind-the-scenes peak at the gay porn world. Michael Cunio plays Sean, a Hollywood newbie who falls in love with a gay porn star after he rents a movie he thinks is Citizen Kane but turns out to be a gay porno. He falls in love with the star, Johnny Rebel (Scott Gurney), and scores a job at Janus Films, maker of all of Johnny Rebel films, as a cameraman to be closer to the object of his affections. Soon he becomes Johnny's fluffer and things get both physical and emotional as Sean falls in love.

A funny yet heartstring-jerking romance that doesn't quite have the depth of, say, Boogie Nights, yet is 20,000 leagues better and more believable than most Hollywood storybook romances, The Fluffer works more often than not. Writer and co-director Wash Westmoreland shows a knack for snappy dialogue and he and co-director Richard Glatzer keeps things moving along at a fun, brisk pace, even when things get a little mushy.

Cunio turns in a fine performance and it's always a pleasure to see Taylor Negron on the big screen. You'll likely remember him as the pizza guy in Fast Times At Ridgemont High... I know I sure did!
