Kitty Media, which did a great job with the first Command Video DVDs, has refurbished this classic for VCX, its owner. All previous digital versions, including the one packaged with the Vivid remake, are now superseded by this cleaned-up, gleaming restoration.

After almost a quarter-century, Devil remains one of the great XXX movies, if only for Georgina Spelvin’s monumental performance as the suicide who discovers the joys of sex posthumously — much too late. The extras include a substantial new interview with the gracious Spelvin — a major plus. The second disc also contains the original cable version, which plays surprisingly well without the hardcore.

What can one say about this classic, that no porn aficionado should be satisfied without having seen it once? Well, one thing we can say is that the image quality of the video-to-digital transfer here is piss-poor at times, though passable at others, and another is that the way the chapters are programmed locks out backward scans to any point earlier than the current chapter. Also, sadly, all the "stills" in the still gallery appear to be digital freeze-frames.

But let's not dwell on the flaws; instead, let's pay tribute to Georgina Spelvin, an excellent actress for her day, and her transformation from the prim, shy Justine Jones into a lust-filled sex addict who, in the end, can't get her fellow inmate in hell (director Gerard Damiano) to fuck her so she can finally get off. In between, Georgina learns how to appreciate sex — straight, lesbian and kinky — thanks to instruction by the great Harry Reems (spelled "Reams" in the credits here).

Coming off the success of Deep Throat, Gerard Damiano turned to Sartre's No Exit for inspiration on his next project. The basic premise for the journey of a prudish lady into the depths of depravity is very existential. Justine Jones (Georgina Spelvin) is an older woman who's grown to hate her life. She's been a good woman, never committed a sin, but she's despondent. Finally, she offs herself. The devil, however, has a problem. Because she killed herself, she comes to him, but there are no sins in her past to haunt her. He lets her return to the real world, where she can do whatever she wants. Be and do what she always wanted. Getting a second chance, she goes for sex, and fucks like a crazed nympho. Harry Reems plays the guy who teaches her tricks of the erotic arts, and their scene sizzles. Finally, she finds herself back in hell, horny as a dog, craving big hard man bones, but she's forced to live forever with a guy who can't get his dick up. Spelvin is absolutely marvelous, impressively going from a virginal schoolmarm into an eccentric, high-strung nymphomaniac who can't get enough dick. It's a serious look into the psychological nature of sex and perversion, and is an all-time porn classic.
