Released over three years ago on VHS, Wadd has been given the sort of special edition treatment that rivals any mainstream disc and raises the bar for future adult disc offerings.
With an obvious emphasis on Holmes and his oversized money-maker, the content of the documentary also serves an interesting history of the adult industry. Interviews with figures of the 70s Golden Age, including John Leslie, Richard Pacheco, Bill Amerson, Bob Chinn, plus the late Bob Vosse and Bobby Hollander, give insight into a time when all the movies were shot on film and the production of those films could land the cast and crew in jail. But the documentary also includes comments from players outside the biz, with interviews from noted industry attorney Paul Cambria, Los Angeles Times filmcritic Ken Turan and former Los Angeles Police Department vice detective Tom Blake.
The documentary also details through different sides the details of Holmes' life. The camera's gaze is unflinching, and sordid details including his drug use (and the industry's drug use), Holmes' flirtation with the gay side of the industry, his involvement in the Wonderland murders and his death from HIV are detailed fairly and objectively.
The extras include an excellent audio commentary, audio and text biographies that can be accessed throughout the movie as the subject is speaking, and additional scenes of Holmes from the VCA archives.
Highly recommended: an important disc, not only for fans of Holmes, but fans of the industry curious about its history.
