Director Will Ryder, who hit paydirt with porn parodies, has turned toward original scripts of late—but that doesn’t mean he’s lost his taste for riffing on pop culture.
In The Young & the Rest of Us he targets daytime soaps, presenting the story of university president Vince Ferrara (Steven St. Croix), whose political ambitions will almost certainly be blown away by some ticking time bombs in his own household: his drug-addled trophy wife (Holly Heart) and his sex-crazed, underachieving offspring (Bentley, Katerina Kay and Tyler Nixon).
Though this effort isn’t as tight as last year’s Love, Sex & TV News, which garnered Ryder an AVN Award for Best Comedy, there’s plenty for fans of laugh-laced lust. Seth Gamble is a standout as Pacman, the coke peddler who cozies up with Vince’s wife and daughter Elizabeth (Bentley). And Sarah Vandella plays a teacher who’s told in no uncertain terms by Vince that she must do anything to get his son’s grades up. So she gets a rise out of the young man by inviting him to peruse the goods at the “Pussy Store.”
There’s plenty more sex, courtesy of daughter Brittany (Kay), who makes out with Anya Ivy outside on the patio furniture, and the family of Vince’s colleague, John (Alec Knight); he enjoys a couch bounce with his wife (Nikki Daniels), while his daughter (Chloe Amour) makes out with newcomer Gemma Jolie.
This DVD represents the first “season” of the serial tale, so it feels like an appetizer. But a second helping is already available, with Season 2 out on DVD.
