Synopsis

Inventive director Dana Vespoli’s “ScrewberX” is a surreal a look at the potential for hardcore sex and comical weirdness in the world of ride sharing.

Reviews

Four vignettes set in the new service of ride-sharing.

Actress Soverign Syre gets in Steve Holmes' Screwber car on her way to an audition. She tries to practice her lines as Holmes gets lost: "This wasn't a dead-end street last week." When they're totally lost—"in a nature preserve! There are hawks!"—he makes an advance ("I can service you better than anybody") and she is amenable as long as "it's going to be all about me." The scene, in bright sunlight on an isolated hilltop in and around Holmes' car, has a reality and an excitement to it, as if two strangers just decided to fuck.

Uptight Dana DeArmond gets picked up by laid-back Tommy Pistol, sipping tea from a canning jar. ("It’s like a yoga session in every sip.") The scene takes an abrupt left turn when Pistol says he's an actor and has an audition with Dana DeArmond and she says, "That's me. Forget it. Audition's off." He pulls off the road, hops out of the car and starts to wildly improvise a dramatic scene. DeArmond tries hard not to break up laughing as Pistol ramps it up—note her desperate look off camera as she silently pleads for Vespoli to call a cut—and as Pistol keeps spinning more and more outlandish tales, DeArmond finally says, "Fuck it, let's just do it. I gotta shut you up somehow," and starts peeling off her clothes. And he still can't resist, asking if she's giving consent to this and she snaps, "I'm giving you consent to eat my pussy." They keep it up throughout the sex scene, with her rating his pussy-eating "four stars" and rolling her eyes cynically as he opens his pants. The scene is playful and funny, with DeArmond and Pistol both trying to take the upper hand throughout.

Religiously devout driver Chad Diamond assures his grandmother that he's going to share The Word with his fares, but when libertines Cherie DeVille and Layla Price get in his backseat they ask him, "Can you drive with boobies in your face?" No. He pulls over and they welcome him to L.A. with a frenzied three-way fuck-and-suck in and out of the SUV. Finale has performer/director Vespoli as the driver of a clown car—literally—as DeArmond, Steve Holmes and Mark Wood get into her car in full makeup and clown suits, communicating only with kazoos and horns until, exasperated, Vespoli explodes, "What do I have to do to get you to SHUT UP?!??" Jumpcut to a white room where she asks, "Where am I?" and the clowns start to have their way with her in a scene that INITIALLY blurs the line between consent and coercion—but she's on board by the time she leads the guys into d.p.'ing her.

Casual shooting and low production values, usually a drawback, are a plus here, adding to the realism. Performers ride the edge of sincerity and sarcasm, never edging too far in either direction.
