Originally shot in 1989, The Adventures of Buttman richly deserved the highest rating given at the time, AAAA. It was also ranked on AVN's best videos of all time and was named as one of the most influential events in porn.

In short, the video's a classic. Remastered for DVD and recut from camera masters for the additional time the format allows, John Stagliano has added an additional 21 minutes to his masterpiece of ass.

Given the mucking around and re-editing notable directors on the other side of the Hollywood Hills have given to their respective masterpieces (Star Wars, E. T, Apocalypse Now), it's only fair to wonder, and have some concern over, the footage added t one of porn's modern classics. It's safe to say that, in this case, it makes for an even better video and shows Stagliano's maturity as an editor. The additional scenes blend seamlessly to the older footage from the use of the video's camera masters. Though the video does have something of a plot, with Stagliano following people around as a videographer and shooting them while they have sex, The Adventures of Buttman is considered to be one of the first examples of gonzo and a classic of the genre. Opening with a scorching b/g scene with Jamie Gillis and Tianna, which hold up well in terms of overall spankability considering the age of the material. The sex is raunchy, even when compared to today's hardcore, with Gillis stuffing cash up Tianna's ass during their fuck scene. Excellent stuff. Mark de Bruin couples with Tanya De Vries and her furry beaver (when was the last time you saw that in a non-specialty title?) poolside in a scene that's all too short. As a reminder that the video was shot in the late '80s, a relatively young and normal-looking Tom Byron convinces Heather Torrance, whose hair is as big as her butt, to an "audition" so she can meet big time rock stars like David Lee Rodi and Vince Neil. But the ample ass and bountiful boobs are the soft of thing that couldn't be dated by age and the sex scene that follows is, as the others are, hot. Rick Daniels and Randy Spears kidnap Stagliano, then double team Champagne (big tittied and big assed, natch). After some coaxing, Stagliano gets Bionca and Sascha into doing some g/g in his place. The video wraps up with Stagliano seducing now-retired knockout Tracey Adams, putting down his camera for some much deserved fucking.

Like his other classic release, Wild Goose Chase, Stagliano lets his camera run while he watches the video, providing a commentary where he points out specific details out in a scene. It makes for good pacing and avoids the long gaps of silence sometimes found on audio commentary tracks. Stagliano goes into the movie, into the history of Evil Angel, explaining how he had financed the company, initially, though credit cards (like so many other fledgling filmmakers) and the history of the gonzo genre. It's a welcome departure from other audio commentaries that sometimes seem superfluous.

Tricia Devereaux, Evil Angel's DVD producer, also adds an extra about authoring and transferring the video. Stagliano also adds his observations about the project while he was reediting the footage.

Considering the age of the masters, the overall disc quality is excellent, except for a few analog dropouts.
