Mike Montana and Karl Bruno are lifeguard lovers tempted to stray; Gianfranco and Scott Randsome are bad-boy bodybuilder surfers looking for trouble. First the two slabs of muscle double-team a hapless moonbather on the beach (Chad Connors); then Randsome seduces Bruno, but the aftermath turns ugly. Cop Chase Hunter arrives on the scene. but mostly investigates worshipful witness Sean Diamond. By video's end, surprise! -- the lovers are reunited. Riptide! features the standard John Travis pluses and minuses. Bodies are to die for and the men are superbly photographed, sex roles are absolutely rigid, cardboard sets clash with location photography, and the dialogue is too much for the actors to handle. (Likewise the action in the fight scene is completely unbelievable.) All in all, though, it's closer to "Baywatch" than Waterworld.
