William Higgins is indeed an undisputed master of his craft. Films like Class Reunion and Sailor In the Wild remain unforgettable classics. And there’s no denying Kip Noll’s superstar status. Nonetheless, Westside, here unearthed for its 30th anniversary, in terms of erotic heat, barely gets beyond a mild smolder. Higgins provides the voiceover narrative that ties the scenes together, a tried-but-true tale of an oversexed stud (Noll) given free reign of his parents’ estate. Throw in a befuddled insurance salesman, a pool boy and some eager workout buddies and you get the sinking feeling you’ve seen this film before. All the Higgins trademarks are here — slow-mo cum-shots, voyeuristic footage of anonymous California locals, cheesy dialogue — elements which do nothing to set this film apart from others in the Higgins canon. And Mr. Noll, who’s given tighter performances in other Higgins films, is outdone by Ben Barker as the aforementioned insurance suit who can’t be bothered to take off his tie while giving service.
