What a treat! There are 12 digitally remastered short films presented here: one from the '50s, seven from the '60s, and four from the '70s. There is no sex, no hard-ons, and no original sound. Instead, there is a joy and excitement for the male body, and the camaraderie and fun shared by men. Some of the segments have men flexing and posing by themselves or with pals. Only two of them ("Mechanic Who Got Bored" and "Stumps and Shannon," both from the '70s) show full frontal nudity. Other films set up mini-stories (statues coming to life to attack thieves, two buds getting hustled in Tijuana, Cleopatra watching a slave fight with a warrior) that end up with the men wrestling. What they all have in common is a carefree quality that suggests nothing of the attitudes of the times they were made in. There is no sense of scandal or taboo here, just a natural appreciation of the male form and a sense of fun that is innocent and infectious. It's a vital historical record, gloriously preserved, set to a perfect modern-day score. There's also a wealth of stills here; usually a throwaway extra on most DVDs, these are just as fun to watch, with many memorable images.
