Reviews

Ansel Rainier makes a promising if undramatic debut as a director in this story of a young man (Lee) considering a military career and fantasizing the sexual opportunities it may offer. But the cast seems strangely out of tune with what's going on, possibly because four of the five soldiers sport foreign accents (three British, one German). Realism is not the feature's forte, and one of the sexual episodes takes place in a decidedly unmilitary setting —a gay bath house.

Rainier also needs to develop his own identity as a director, for he seems under the spell of Vincent de Paul, even to the point of ending his film with a decidedly de Paulian tag line. Nonetheless, except for the bath house scene, Rainier demonstrates a decent sense of pacing and obviously has the talent needed to produce a superior product. Let's hope that he allows it to develop and avoids the trap of formula.
