Michael Zen's first feature in almost two years proves that the director of Falconhead and Falconhead II has not lost his touch. In fact, he explores the same theme of negative/positive attitudes toward sexuality in a more direct, though less complex manner. Michael Brawn and Lon Flexxe star as two friends spending the night in the Paradise Motel in a small western town. Flexxe begins his exploration of the darker side of sexuality in his fantasies of an almost sinister figure (Alex Stone) who beckons to him from inside a railroad tunnel -- with an oncoming train heard in the distance. Brawn, on the other hand, wants to replace his friend's fantasy and become his lover -- but after their first sexual contact, Flexxe rejects him as a "whore."

By the end of the feature Flexxe has become the real whore, because of his inability to join sexual expression with affection and commitment. Brawn has the last words: "You really are a whore. But I love you anyway."

With allusions to Hitchcock, Gertrude Stein and Hollywood potboilers of the 50's, Zen proves himself a master of adult video. He inspires his cast to first-rate performances, particularly Brawn, and creates throughout an atmosphere that is both threatening and erotic. The coupling of Stone and Flexxe (reality or fantasy?) is the only scene that lacks this double whammy -- the chemistry just isn't there. But the rest of He-Devils is dynamite, no matter whether you see it as a metaphoric journey or a simple sex trip. The package is also quite an eyecatcher, with Stone looking his best.
