Reviews

This early Steve Scott film (theatrically released in 1980) finally makes its video debut courtesy of Bijou Video. Typical of Scott's work, it's a worldly-wise look at day-to-day human relationships and secret longings brought to light. Scott's death last year (of AIDS-related conditions) cut short a prolific career. His work encompassed over two dozen gay films (1984's Screen Play with Lee Ryder is probably the best) and four straight porn movies (including 1985's highly-touted Trashy Lady). Scott also worked on mainstream productions like Sextette and Malibu Express, but it was his distinctly mature and knowing approach to erotica that outlives him, and will probably outlast the competition. (A comprehensive look at Scott's career, by John W. Rowberry, appeared in the February 1988 issue of the gay video magazine Studflix).

Track Meet features a strong story, strong characters, and strong sex. Gavin Geoffrey is at the film's heart as a young athlete not quite ready to come out of his closet. Surrounded by sex, Gavin answers every come-on with a sneer – this guy needs to get laid bad. Instead he gets laid badly, raped by a black hotel janitor in a scene of amazingly quiet desperation. Sexual healing follows, as Gavin reaches out to a straight buddy for understanding. Track Meet's calm realism, gentle humor and ultimate optimism are all Steve Scott at his best.
