What happens when Mother Goose meets Sigmund Freud? Director Jim Steel gives the definitive answer in a delightfully scripted, wittily directed and intensely erotic spoof of every gay man's dream: To meet his knight in shining armor and live happily ever after. Yates rips up the screen in a magnificent dual-role performance as the innocent, much-abused Prince Charming and his cynical, wicked twin Prince Blackheart. The final scene, in which Charming finds his true love (newcomer Adam Archer), combines lustful passion with sentimental romance to rank among Steel's most accomplished sexual scenes.
The plot is developed by two narrators. First is Lester the Jester (Les Stine), who parodies his own ethnic heritage by reading from a collection of fairy tales in an exaggerated New York Jewish accent. Second is Moo Goo Shang Hai, the Chinese soothsayer who gives what may well be the nonsexual performance of the year. In fact, my main complaint about this video is that Moo Goo should have received more screen time than Stine.
Steel's script combines down-and-dirty sex with outrageous satire that includes genuinely funny anachronisms as well as imaginative sexual innuendo. As writer and director, he shines brilliantly. As videographer, he has a few lessons to learn about varying the camera angles, but all in all, he proves himself a master of many trades. Packaging is among Vivid's best.
