The overdose on MTV editing styles prevents Where The Boys Are from possessing a singular style of its own. It is nonetheless a satisfying tape. The premise of the narrative is to take seven young Brits to Portugal to make a sex video, as well as to have fun. The box cover promises 20 additional minutes not previously seen, and it's fair to assume that means the inclusion of behind-the-scenes footage.
Narrator Danny Adams introduces the participants (ages 18-21), and director Mike Esser decides which of them need to have their pubes clipped. A hidden ballot is used to democratically pair the guys up, allowing them to do scenes with their top choices.
Erotic, well-lit, simulated sex scenes employ techniques to hide the actual penetration, normally considered errors in hardcore tapes. Heads, knees and even trees obstruct the view, though occasionally a shadow on the ground belies the simulation by revealing a blowjob in progress. All this teasing has an occasional payoff with some fine semi-erect cocks coming into view.
Adams, also acting as an interviewer, questions the cast about the heat factor of the sex that the viewer is denied the chance to watch. The cast responds by making Adams - and you - privy to information deliberately missed in the visuals, and revealing their escapades with the Portuguese men they met while on holiday. These interviews are marred by ping-pong style, annoying and indecisive camera movements between the speakers, which are never in time with the dialogue.
