"Andel" is Czech for "Angel"; and our hero is a young soldier stationed in Prague.
The episodic story (with English subtitles) follows Andel and his off-duty army buddies as they hitch rides, get drunk, and horse around at the "stop" - all situations rife with casual sex. Andel himself is the quiet, aloof type who never makes the first move, but with a little coaxing he's a do-anything bottom. It's a stpo-on character study.
Location photography, an exuberant young cast, and the sheer variety of sex sustains interest throughout the long running time. There's a cook who treats his assistant's burned finger with butter (all over his body!), a fiveway in the showers, voyeurism indoors and out, and just a little romance. Andel's twice-in-one-night tryst with a stunning civilian (ready-for-Hollywood Pavel Dubcek) is a stand-out.
This labor of love from director Hof lives up to its classy packaging. A sequel is promised.
