The company known today as Show World traces its adult roots back to 1975, when owner Jan DeGroote purchased the Lyell Theater in Rochester, New York, and began showing adult films like "Deep Throat," "The Devil and Miss Jones" and "A Coming of Angels." The films were very popular and DeGroote soon purchased the Little, Monroe and Cinema Art theaters. The advent of beta and VHS technology ushered in changes in the 1980s, and Mr. DeGroote's theaters evolved into large adult retail stores featuring adult DVDs, magazines, toys and novelties, lingerie and smoking supplies. Today, the long tradition of providing the best in adult entertainment continues with the DeGroote-owned Show World superstores in Henrietta, Greece/Rochester and Waterloo, New York.
