MIAMI—Joslyn Jane, the adult film star and indie content creator, has a few thoughts on the effect that celebrities such as Bella Thorne are having for sex workers on OnlyFans, and she shared them with
Playboy writer

OnlyFans actually started as a gathering site for mainstream influencers and some celebrities to offer content to their fans, and recently, in an attempt to rehabilitate its media image, it has been pushing hard for more non-sex-work-related influencers to join its platform. Thomas notes that “when Thorne joined OnlyFans and crashed the site in August, it was the least surprising thing to happen on the platform. OnlyFans had been aimed toward a moment like Thorne’s for a while; similarly, the adult industry had been heading for a moment like the rise of OnlyFans for years.”
Jane notes in the piece that most sex workers weren’t surprised when Thorne’s entrance shook the platform. “She’s not the first celebrity to do this. She was the big name that blew it out of the water because she made so much money, but it’s been going on for a while.”
But “C-list celebrity” Thorne’s recent rise to media prominence—she teased fans that subscribers to her OnlyFans would see her fully nude, a propmise she reneged on—may have come at a cost to sex workers, and Jane agrees that “The Bella Thorne Effect” has highlighted the site’s growing pains.
“I know some people who are now doing a lot more PG stuff and a lot less adult stuff on their OnlyFans,” Jane stated. “A lot of people believe that because all these famous people are joining OnlyFans now and OnlyFans is pushing them to join the platform, it’s no longer going to be an adult site. That’s the fear a lot of people have.”
