LONDON, UK—Men’s lifestyle site HarrietSugarcookie.com separates the mythology from the facts of the BDSM lifestyle in its revealing new article, "Is the Fetish Community Anything like 50 Shades of Grey?"
The site’s video post, also available to view in a SFW YouTube version, explores the enduring popularity of the 50 Shades trilogy series more than five years after its explosive literary introduction into the world's consciousness.
“Everyone has read the books or seen the movies,” wrote Sugarcookie of the 50 Shades sensation, further cemented by the strong box office sales of 50 Shades Darker’s weekend film debut. “Kink is now mainstream. But what is the fetish community like in the real world?”
Sugarcookie visited Las Vegas’ AVN Adult Entertainment Expo (AEE), asking some of the conference attendees about the realities of fetish, specifically compared to the S&M techniques of the sexy leads depicted in the wildly popular 50 Shades books and films.
“The weirdest thing I’ve ever done? What’s considered weird?” asked porn star Katrina Jade, who spoke of her fondness for being caged in a dog kennel.
Mike from Bastard Ropes explained that, for women, “the general appeal of rope bondage is … when they have rope on their bodies, they feel sexy, they feel attractive,” who utilizes rope “as a tool to make you feel more beautiful, to accentuate your already attractive self.”
“Everybody thinks it’s about beating something up and brutal pain,” said Justin Sayne of Justin Sayne Leather. “It’s really not about that; it’s about being able to come up with proper sensation, proper attention… a lot more of my stuff is tickly and pink than hard and black.”
Fetish model Madam Raven Rae likes “food being eaten off of me and out of me; I like to be a human plate. To watch somebody get off on their fetish, to me, is so erotic… it’s who we are. We’re sexual beings”
For actress Cassidy Klein, “I’ve played with electricity… There are electric dildos… When it’s inside you, it kind of feels like a vibrator, almost… but also a little tiny shock, like when you touch a door handle.”
Danielle Cory from Las Vegas’ fetish emporium The Black Room, introduced Sugarcookie to the Triple Wheel pinwheel: “So if you’re bound up and blindfolded, your senses will be a lot stronger… Use this on the butt, the inner thigh, the arm, the back… It’s an intense feeling.”
As for the authenticity of the 50 Shades story, “don’t trust 50 Shades of Grey,” said Cory. “Go for Screw the Roses, Give Me the Thorns… It’s a real-life example of a polyamorous fetish relationship and a lot of information.”
