Wiseman is known for his contributions and leadership regarding safety and best practices in kink. More than 15 years before Fifty Shades of Grey arrived, he self published and distributed S&M 101: A Realistic Introduction, one of the first definitive educational books on BDSM. He would later partner with Lady Green of Greenery Press, helping establish the publishing company as an authority on kink.
Wiseman’s other books include Jay Wiseman's Erotic Bondage Handbook, Tricks – More than 125 Ways to Make Good Sex Better, and Dungeon Emergencies and Supplies, among others.
Besides his reputation in San Francisco as a legendary BDSM instructor with EMT field experience, he is also known for deciding to expand his credibility by studying law and passing the California State Bar exam. He later went on to use the experience to teach others to avoid physical harm and legal folly with kinky practices in the bedroom.
