Erotic Heritage Museum Sponsoring UNLV Collection Launch Today

LAS VEGAS—The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Special Collections and Archives and the UNLV College of Liberal Arts Department of Interdisciplinary, Gender, and Ethnic Studies is extending a public invitation for their new program's launch. Sponsored by the Erotic Heritage Museum for the new collecting area, the Sexual Entertainment and Economies event will be held today, from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m, at the UNLV's Beverly Rogers Literature & Law Building, Room 101.

This event will include an afternoon symposium and an evening reception with a discussion with the donors of the inaugural collection, Shar Rednour and Jackie Strano. Complimentary refreshments will be provided.

As the museum's director, Dr. Victoria Hartmann, offered, "The preservation and archiving of sexual materials provides an unfiltered look into the most intimate spaces human beings share. It gives us insight into how people express themselves sexually unencumbered by propriety and the judgments of others. Nevada has a unique history as being one of the few states where sexuality has entire industries built around it—from topless shows to legal brothels. The EHM is thrilled to sponsor this initiative at UNLV and its efforts to create a foundation for academics to pursue studies in human sexuality at a top-tier university.”

The UNLV College of Liberal Arts has established its new initiative "to preserve the history of sexual entertainment, culture and economies in Southern Nevada and beyond," a rep. from UNLV stated. "This program will include collections on sex worker rights and activism, feminist entrepreneurship, adult film and media, and the history of Nevada's legal brothel industry."

The Erotic Heritage Museum was built as a sex-positive educational, entertainment, and exhibition space, celebrating the diversity of sexuality as it has been explored and enjoyed through history, multiple cultures, and the ever-evolving global perspective of modern mores.

This is a free event.
