Pure Play Reacts to Empire Distributors Fallout

CHATSWORTH, Calif. – Pure Play Media is looking to scoop up new customers in the wake of yesterday's news that Empire Video Distributors has closed its doors. As an incentive, Pure Play is offering a 10 percent discount to former Empire clients who join Pure Play's Direct-to-Retail program as new customers.

Empire was one of the largest one-stop adult video distributors on the West Coast, carrying product from all of the industry's major manufacturers. AVN reported Wednesday afternoon that owner Roy Karch had abruptly shut down the operation, locking his warehouse doors after a decade in business.

In a press release issued this afternoon, Pure Play pointed to the demise of Empire as a symbol of the problems with the adult industry's traditional wholesale distribution model.

"I have been saying for some time that having one company represent hundreds of studios and thousands of titles cannot be a great way of selling movies both for the studios and to the retailers," said Pure Play CEO Richard Arnold. "Pure Play's method can only benefit both the studio and the retailer, and, ultimately, the consumer."

Arnold argues that in many other territories around the world, adult video distributors cut out the middleman to maximize profits. Pure Play began using this model to the U.S. last year, making a radical departure from the way its competitors do business.

"I think this is the way of the future," Arnold said. "Unfortunately, this does not bode well for some of the companies in today's marketplace."
