LOS ANGELES, CA—2013 Exxxotica BBW Female Performer of the Year and size-acceptance advocate Kelly Shibari will be providing her unique voice and insight on a panel at Woodhull Sexual Freedom Summit this weekend.
Kelly will offer her perspective alongside four other sex and body-positive thought leaders, including iconic transgender filmmaker Buck Angel, emotional freedom coach Cathy Vartuli, sensuality guru Elle “Lady Cheeky” Chase, and outspoken sex blogger N'Jaila Rhee. Their panel will be presenting a workshop entitled, “Where Sex Meets 'Isms': From Shame to Self-Expression.”
Kelly, along with the other panel members, will shed light on the shame and fear of rejection (both internal and external), which limits sexual self-expression. The workshop will review the major “isms”: sizeism, ageism, ableism, racism, sexualism and genderism. The panel will then examine internalized beliefs about body image and identity, which are reinforced and created by a barrage of information about how people “should be,” as a prerequisite to feeling sexy or being sexual.
“As someone who’s experienced shaming and bullying first-hand as a child as well as an adult, it’s very important to me to share my story,” said Kelly. “The number of people who feel shame, anxiety, and inferiority complexes at the hands of others is at an all-time high, and it needs to be addressed and discussed, to create and implement real and lasting solutions. If my personal story of overcoming the shame from first-hand experience with bullies helps those experiencing it, as well as those who coach and educate, then I’m honored to be a part of that process.”
The Fourth Annual Woodhull Sexual Freedom Summit will be held in Washington, D.C., September 19-22, 2013. The national event features human rights activists, professionals from the legal and medical fields, authors, sexual freedom movement leaders and organizational partners all working toward the time when sexual freedom is fully recognized as a fundamental human right.
“I’m so grateful that a conference such as Woodhull exists," Kelly stated. "Having a forum that discusses the political, social, educational, and cultural aspects of sexuality, in a highly positive, compassionate venue, means that we all are given the opportunity to collaborate and grow as a people. It’s how things should be, when discussing anything that addresses anything outside of a solitary ego. I’m truly humbled to have been invited to be a part of this prestigious process.”
As a BBW model/performer, Kelly is intimately familiar with the body-negative messages that are broadcast through the media on a daily basis. She is passionate about introducing body-positive messages into the media spotlight. Her article on plus-size sexuality and pornography on Jane Pratt’s SAY MEDIA site, xojane, was one of the site’s most popular articles.
Kelly has written for several adult industry sites, including HotMoviesForHer, AllAdultNetwork, and CAM4. She was also a featured guest editor on ex-Gawker Media site Fleshbot's Kelly Shibari Week.
Kelly runs a PR and marketing consultancy for the adult industry, The PRSM Group, and has spoken at numerous adult and mainstream conventions on the use of social media as a marketing and branding tool for the adult industry, including AVN, Inbound Marketing Summit, and BlogWorldExpo. Kelly is also the Executive of Social and Media Relations for premiere industry firm FineAssMarketing.
