California Governor Jerry Brown recently signed a bill into law making California the first state to require mandatory sex education classes in schools including material about sexual harassment, violence, and the “yes means yes” standard for positive consent.

Watching the Hawks co-hosts Tabetha Wallace and Tyrel Ventura (son of former Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura) spoke with drake about these laws and her own experience educating college students and adults about consent.

“The consent law is a very positive step forward,” said drake on the show. “I think it helps clearly define sexual boundaries, and I think that when we are talking about consent, it is something that has not previously been taught in schools, so we really need help, and we need guidance on it. It takes a grey area, and it makes it more black and white.”

When asked about the term “affirmative consent,” drake responded, “Affirmative consent is enthusiastic consent… It is saying yes… or giving a signal that you are willing to proceed with whatever is happening.” She went on to explain the three pillars of consent: “You know what it is you are agreeing to; you decide that it is something that you want to do; you communicate your desires.”

After Wallace brought up an article on Reason.com detailing criticism from some feminists regarding the laws, drake reminded viewers that it’s still early to form conclusive opinions on such a new law, but that “any progress in sexual education, awareness, and consent can only be a good thing for us.”

In addition to educating men, women, and couples about sex through her line of instructional DVDs, jessica drake’s Guide to Wicked Sex, drake also tours the country speaking at colleges. When discussing these appearances, drake stated, “It consistently surprises me how many times people have been in sexual situations and have not known how to clearly express their boundaries. So when we hand them a guideline like this, and we’re saying this is okay to say yes or to say no, and consent is an important part of a sexual negotiation, I think it can help.”

Whether teaching her factual style of sexual education via her movies, seminars, or media appearances, jessica drake has always emphasized healthy sexual practices, respectful attitudes about sex, and attention to pleasure. She stresses consent and respect among partners, while encouraging people to move away from a fear-based mentality towards sex.
