PHILADELPHIA, Pa.—The innovative Breaking Glass Pictures has announced the July 6 DVD release (retail $24.99) of a film that straddles the line between pornography and cinema. Sex Stories (Histoires de Sexe(s)) is a fearless and honest French film that explores the complexities of modern relationships. It just so happens the film initially earned an X rating.
Sex Stories may have all the trappings of a typical porn film (full nudity, attractive stars, various scenes of real sex), but we’d expect nothing less from director Ovidie, one of France’s most recognizable adult film stars. Considering she began acting in adult films at 18 and directing them shortly thereafter, she’s certainly an expert on the subject of sensuality.
Of course, the French queen of porn is also known as an intello du X (intellectual of the X), meaning Sex Stories backs up its unbridled eroticism with well-informed discussions of how lovers can take their sexual gratification to new extremes.
"Sex Stories has the ambition to break free of pornography codes and rules of the adult industry, while representing a realistic and explicit sexuality," says Ovidie. “[It’s] directed with humor and real tenderness.”
The film’s perspective is also far more gender-balanced than the usual male-oriented adult film: the script follows two simultaneous dinner parties—one for the cast of female characters, the other for their male counterparts. After discussing their recent sexual escapades, each character—and each member of the audience—walks away with a renewed appreciation for stimulating conversation.
If Breaking Glass Pictures’ goal is to ignite dialogue between men and women on what both sides really want, then the inimitable Ovidie is more than happy to show audiences firsthand what great sex looks like. Just be warned: you may be craving a cigarette by the time the credits roll.
