LOS ANGELES—A new survey for men’s lifestyle site Sugarcookie.com uncovers various ways men use Instagram for dating, sex and pornography.
Over a thousand men aged 18-35 were polled about their Instagram habits, including the main reason why they use it. The most common reasons given were to keep up with celebrities and public figures (60%) and 50% because they love photography.
Site founder Harriet Sugarcookie said, “It really shouldn’t be that surprising. Instagram is primarily a photo-sharing site and celebrities dominate the biggest accounts.”
Guys have also shown to be interested in a different kind of photography on Instagram: 28% use it to find pictures and videos to masturbate to. Of those men, 28% masturabate to celebrities and public figures, 27% to pornstars and camgirls, 20% to photos of their friends.
“Whilst only 7% of men use Instagram for their work business, a whopping 28% use it to help them with their more private business. I was so surprised, it seems like a missed opportunity.” said Sugarcookie.
However the survey also found that many guys use Instagram for other opportunities with 14% of men having dated someone they met on the social network and 7% of guys admitting that dating is the primary reason for using it.
“Guys are really using Instagram to get lucky,” said Sugarcookie. “It probably helps that girls way outnumber guys on Instagram, so there are a lot of opportunities on the app for single guys. The term 'Slide in DMs' is seen as a compliment, since most people assume you have to be confident and smooth to chat up a random Instagram girl.”
It’s not just dates that guys are searching for either. Our survey found 5% of men have paid for sex on Instagram and a further 7% are paying for nude photos and videos on the app.
“Instagram has a lot of flexibility to give guys what they’re looking for romantically. Whether it’s hot photos to masturbate to, potential dates or paid meetings, guys can browse inconspicuously through endless hotties.”
