NEW YORK—Sharesome announced that beginning this week, it will serve all content it detects on a slow internet connection as ASCII.
“Our aim is to always be at the forefront of innovation and by converting all content to ASCII we can save precious bandwidth, which is a big deal for our mobile users on 2G or slow 3G connections,” said Andrew Nelson, Sharesome’s head of product.
The company has made available a demo on Sharesome.com/coming-soon/ASCII/ where users can upload images and preview the ASCII version.
“We are currently working on compressing the ASCII text to further save bandwidth as well as adding support for gifs and videos,” Nelson said.
According to the adult social media website, this is the first of a set of new features targeted at the ever-increasing number of mobile users, especially from developing countries.
