Bob Guccione’s Personal Cut of 'Caligula' Released for Download

NEW YORK CITY—In conjunction with the September issue of Vice magazine’s Archival Dedication to Bob Guccione, The Guccione Collection announces the release of the never-before-seen raw cut of Bob Guccione’s infamous film, Caligula. The 157-minute digital download is available here.

“We are pleased to introduce this previously-unreleased version of Caligula. This version of the film introduces past, present and future fans to a side of Bob’s creative genius that has never been seen before,” said Guccione Collection’s CEO Jeremy Frommer. “Although Caligula was notoriously controversial in the late 1970s, we feel a part of Bob’s legacy is in this film.”

According to its founders, the Guccione Collection is an ever-evolving testament to the legacy of Bob Guccione. His successes and public downfall prior to his death in 2010 have tended to obscure his innovations in the adult entertainment field. Many have deemed Guccione a visionary, advancing the fields of publishing, journalism, futurism, fine arts, photography and more. The Guccione Collection is devoted to illuminating all the varied corners of Bob’s legacy.

This film is the version of Caligula that Bob intended, with never-before-seen footage, chronological changes and altered dialogue. A number of scenes are untreated and unfinished, exposing set production and personnel.

“Viewed through a different prism by a world desensitized to sex and violence, this never-before-seen version will be viewed as the masterpiece that is Caligula,” Frommer declared.

The historically epic film, conceived and backed by Bob Guccione, has garnered the reputation as one of the most outrageous productions in film history. The hard-core footage, some of which was shot by Guccione, himself, offers a ground-breaking and explicit vision of ancient Rome.
