Schedule For Woodhull's Day-Long Institute In August Announced

ALEXANDRIA, Va.—The Woodhull Freedom Foundation released the schedule for its Day-Long Institute, slated for Aug. 5.

The event takes place during the seventh annual Sexual Freedom Summit, which runs Aug. 4-7 in Alexandria, Va. The Summit is focused on sexual freedom as a fundamental human right in the U.S.

“Today, one in three Americans is age 50 or older; by 2030, one in five will be 65 or older,” said Ricci Levy, president and CEO of Woodhull Freedom Foundation. “How can we protect the sexual rights of older adults, when prevailing myths tell us they aren’t sexual any longer? The Summit’s Sexuality and Aging Training Institute will help attendees learn to dispel these myths, while learning about exciting developments being made in research at the intersection of sexuality and aging.”

This year’s Institute features nine presentations, ranging from LGBT senior community building, STIs in elder communities, and PrEP, to nurturing connections through healthy touch, and more. Keynote speakers for this year are:

• Mandy Carter, a Nobel Prize nominee, long-time LGBT activist, member of the Obama National LGBT Steering and Policy Committee, co-founder of Southerners On New Ground (SONG), and past Woodhull Vicky Award recipient; she has done the hard work of organizing LGBT grassroots networks, especially of people of color, throughout the South.

• Roberta R. Greene, PhD, LCSW, a gerontology and social work professor at the University of Texas at Austin before retirement. Working with older adults and their families, marriage and family therapy, and refugee resettlement, she was instrumental in passing the 1987 Nursing Home Reform Act (OBRA). Dr. Greene is the author of 13 books, numerous research articles, and is a recipient of the 2004 NASW Pioneer Award and the AGE-SW 2005 Career Achievement Award.

“In partnership with Woodhull’s Sexual Freedom Summit, Widener University’s Sexuality and Aging Consortium brings a very special learning experience considering the vital issues of sexuality and aging,” said Mandy Farsace, director of Woodhull Sexual Freedom Summit. “The program, open to everyone—not just professionals—will be full of new information, fresh perspectives, and clear paths toward a happier, healthier future for the aging populations.”

Those who attend The Sexuality and Aging Training Institute will receive up to six CE credits towards AASECT and social work requirements. To be eligible, anyone seeking CE credits must sign in and out of each session, and complete an evaluation. To register, visit SexualFreedomSummit.org/registration.
