Robert Tat Gallery to Showcase Legendary Gatewood Works

SAN FRANCISCO,CA — Legendary photographer Charles Gatewood has seen and met a lot of people —and photographed a lucky few. Now through November 26, 2011, visitors to San Francisco’s Robert Tat Gallery will have the opportunity to admire some of Gatewood’s iconic images.

The exhibition will coincide with the release of Burroughs 23, a limited-edition, handmade artist’s book featuring Gatewood’s William S. Burroughs photographs.

Charles Gatewood began his career in 1966 with his now-famous portrait of Bob Dylan, shot at a press conference in Stockholm, Sweden. Since then, he has pursued a 45-year journey as a photojournalist and fine art photographer. He has worked on assignment for Rolling Stone, The New York Times, Harper’s, Time, and other national publications. His images have been compared to those of Diane Arbus, Robert Frank and Weegee, and have included subjects including Dylan, Rod Stewart, Carlos Santana, Boz Scaggs, Al Green, Allen Ginsberg and other Beat generation writers, Annie Sprinkle, Fakir and others.

Gatewood has published over a dozen books in his lifetime, including Wall Street, Sidetripping, Forbidden Photographs, Primitives, The Body and Beyond, True Blood and Badlands. During the exhibition, two limited edition books will be made available for purchase; a select few issues of A Complete Unknown (a collection of rare Dylan photos), and Burroughs 23

The Robert Tat Gallery specializes in Photographic Modernism and shows works by 20th century master photographers. It is located at 49 Geary Street, Suite 410 in downtown San Francisco.

“One of the joys of making the book, Burroughs 23, was going through the 40-year-old negatives with my publisher, Dana Smith, and finding fantastic never-before-seen images,” said Gatewood. “Hey, William Burroughs fans — check it out!”

A special event, which includes a reception and gallery chat with the renowned artist, will be held on Saturday, October 15, from 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm.
