"I started Dallas Novelty back in 2003 when a friend asked me if I knew anything about sex toys and if I knew where to buy them cheap,” said Nick Mahler, founder of DallasNovelty.com. “After looking into the business for a few months I signed up with my first distributor and started my journey into the adult novelty world and helping people find pleasure. When I retired from the mortgage business after 10 years I found that most of the websites selling sex toys did not know what they were selling, what it was made of or how it worked. Being disabled myself I knew the struggles of finding the right toy and there were not many places that really understood what limited mobility was."
Founded in 2003 by Mahler, DallasNovelty.com carries a large selection of functional toys for the disabled for a reason. Mahler, has a very rare muscular skeletal disease called Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva or FOP for short. It occurs in one in 2 million people with around 700 people diagnosed worldwide and fewer than 300 in the U.S. This ultra-rare disease causes all muscles, tendons and ligaments to calcify or turn into solid bone causing joints to be frozen in place sometimes overnight. There is currently no known cure or treatment other than pain management for FOP but there are some human drug trials taking place around the world that are looking very promising.
"I lost the movement of my back, shoulders, neck, jaw and upper arms before I was 10 and lost movement of my hips, knees, ankles and feet 19 years ago,” Mahler said. “The only movement I currently have is in my elbows, wrists, fingers and toes but that doesn't stop me from traveling around the country for medical forums to help with research of FOP and the cure for it that will help amputees, osteoporosis and other bone related ailments."
With all his obstacles, it didn't stop him from building one of the most dominant online retail sites in the nation for adult novelties, but he wanted to be able to help other people in his position find the perfect toy.
