LONDON—The United Sex Workers union made a historic appearance on BBC's Newsnight on Feb. 2. The union's online representative, Countess Diamond, was invited as a guest speaker to discuss the rights and protections for sex workers in the U.K.
During the interview, Diamond appeared alongside journalist Jenni Murray and headteacher Darren Gelder who is the Principal at Grace Academy in Solihull. The discussion centered around the Online Harms Bill and a new report by the U.K.'s children’s commissioner Dame Rachel de Souza.
Diamond spoke about the work of the USW sex workers union in advocating for the rights of sex workers and promoting safe working conditions. She highlighted the importance of the union providing recognition and security for sex workers, as well as addressing the stigma and discrimination faced by this marginalized group.
The discussion was centered around the issue of online harm, and the implications of the European Council-approved Digital Services Act and the UK's Online Safety Bill, which is going through the House of Lords. Diamond emphasized the importance of bringing experienced voices into the discussion of online protection, particularly in the context of the sex work industry which remains largely unregulated.
Murray stated, "It is time for the government to take on the pornographers and ban them."
However, Diamond pointed out that regulation and protection are key, and that the USW union works towards creating processes to ensure the safety and protection of those involved in online sex work.
Diamond also discussed the Online Harms Bill and the role these regulations could play in promoting safe and fair working conditions for sex workers as well as striving to educate the public about the realities of sex work and to dispel harmful stereotypes and misconceptions. She encouraged sex workers to join the USW sex workers union to advocate for their rights and ensure they are protected and safe.
