PATTAYA, Thailand—Ricci Levy of Woodhull Freedom Foundation is this week's guest on "Adult Site Broker Talk." Levy has been engaged in sexual freedom activism for several decades.
In 2003, she helped found the Woodhull Freedom Foundation, a nonpartisan, nonprofit human rights organization dedicated to defending the personal autonomy of all individuals. As the executive director, then president and CEO, Levy has led Woodhull for more than 20 years.
Levy has given evidence and spoken at conferences nationwide, frequently presenting divisive topics in a way that encourages cooperative dialogue to forge coalitions and create bridges. She is at the forefront of the human rights movement, bringing issues like censorship, the liberalization of sex work, the shackling of laboring prisoners, and the right to family and reproductive justice to the forefront of discussion.
Since its founding, the Foundation has battled to recognize sexual freedom as a basic human right that belongs alongside other hard-won freedoms like the right to privacy, the right to family, and freedom of speech.
Together with allies who represent particular issues, identities and communities, Levy also acts as a general advocate for sexual rights, whether she is speaking to students about the legitimacy of all consenting families or successfully pleading with Congress to ban condoms as proof of prostitution.
The Woodhull Freedom Foundation seeks to alter laws, regulations and practices pertaining to various topics that all share the common trait of either negating or endangering our inalienable right to sexual freedom. Woodhull played a key role in ensuring that domestic partner benefits—a detail that was at risk in the original legislation—were included as a component of same-sex marriage.
The group testified and lobbied on behalf of efforts to end the practice of shackling incarcerated women during labor and delivery in Florida prisons, and it played a significant role in the termination of Washington D.C.'s "Prostitution Free Zones," which infringed on legally defendable rights.
Apart from promoting legislative, judicial and corporate responsibility and advancement, the Woodhull Freedom Foundation is the leading voice at the intersection of human and sexual rights, urging the U.S. to uphold rather than restrict human rights, including those pertaining to sexual freedom.
Woodhull was the principal litigant in the lone federal challenge to the lethal FOSTA law, Woodhull Freedom Foundation et al. v. United States.
