WASHINGTON, D.C.—The Woodhull Freedom Foundation recently sent an email seeking donations to support their work in gaining sexual freedom rights for all:
Holidays are often centered around family: our families of birth, our chosen families, the family that loves us or the family that won’t accept us. It’s not always easy, but it is family nonetheless.
No matter what your family looks like, or how your family celebrates the holidays, you have a right to have the family of your choice. We all have the human right to family. It’s not a privilege: it’s a right to feel safety, love, comfort.
You may already realize that Woodhull fights for our right to sexual freedom, but you might not realize that we are also fighting hard and strong for this human right: the right to family. But while gains have been made in some areas, the battle for human rights—for sexual rights and for the right to family—is far from over.
In times of tragedy and devastating losses we have often recognized the short-sightedness of traditional household definitions and opened up benefits to all families. For example, after the devastating terrorist attacks of 9/11, New York's Gov. Pataki issued an executive order that suspended state law. He did this to make it easier to process legal claims and deliver aid to everyone, regardless of family structure, by establishing a broader definition of family.
Our point? It shouldn’t take a tragedy to insist that “traditional,” “non-traditional,” immediate, and extended families be treated alike.
We’re asking for your support to help us continue to secure the right to family for all families, because all families really do matter…
