Indie Comedy ‘BearCity’ Begins Production in New York

NEW YORKBearCity, a mainstream gay romantic comedy, has begun principal photography in Manhattan and other greater New York City locations. Produced by TLA Releasing, the film was written by Douglas Langway (Raising Heroes) and Lawrence Ferber (Cruise Control and Birthday Time) and will be directed by Langway.

Set in New York’s gay “bear” scene, a subculture dedicated to mostly hirsute men, and taking a cue from the popular HBO franchise “Sex and the City,” BearCity follows a tight-knit pack of friends experiencing comical mishaps, emotionally sweet yet lusty romantic encounters and a cast of colorful, diverse characters as they gear up for a big party weekend.

“We are thrilled that BearCity is our inaugural film for the 2009-2010 production slate,” said TLA spokesman Derek Curl, who serves as co-executive producer with TLA’s Lewis Tice. “With the combined efforts of our talented director, a recognizable cast and a strong production team, this New York-flavored romantic comedy is going to be great entertainment.”

The ensemble cast includes Gerald McCullouch (Bobby Dawson on CBS’ “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation”), newcomer Joe Conti, Brian Keane (NBC’s “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”), Stephen Guarino (Logo Television’s “Big Gay Sketch Show”), Alex Di Dio, Gregory Gunter, James Martinez (CBS’ “Numb3rs”) and Sebastian Le Cause (Chicago).

In addition to Curl and Tice, crew credits include Heidi H. Hamelin as producer, Michael Hauer as director of photography, Racey North as production designer, Kathryn Moser as costume director and Zoe E. Rotter as casting director.

TLA Releasing plans to distribute the film in 2010. For up-to-date information about BearCity, visit the website at BearCityTheMovie.com.
