SAN FRANCISCO - Since 2001, the Dieux du Stade ("Gods of the Stadium") have peeled down to their birthday suits to be photographed by some of the top photographers in the world. The calendars exceed sales expectations year after year, only to be topped by sales of the "Making of the Calendar" DVD that has followed calendar production each year since 2004.
Already the 2009 calendars - sought after by both women and gay men - have sold out in the U.S. And, once again, the DVD has been brought to U.S. retailers by Prerogatives.
The 2009 Dieux du Stade Making of the Calendar DVD brings together French rugby stars, their friends and renowned photographer Peter Lindbergh. Lindbergh's subjects have included top models Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford, Isabella Rossellini and Nastassja Kinski.
The popularity of the calendars has been credited with increasing the profile of the Stade Français rugby team. Past photographers include Kris Gautier (2001 and 2002), Mathias Vriens (2003), François Rousseau (2004), Carter Smith (2005), Fred Goudon (2006), Mariano Vivanco (2007) and Steven Klein (2008).
Profits from sales of the calendars and DVDs benefit charities in France.
