SAN DIEGO, Calif.—Marc John Randazza, a prominent media and entertainment attorney who specializes in First Amendment and intellectual property issues, has joined gay adult studio Corbin Fisher as general counsel. The new post is a full-time, regular staff position, for Randazza, who previously was a partner in the East Coast office of the law firm Weston, Garrou, Walters & Mooney.
Randazza’s primary focus at Corbin Fisher will be to lead the company’s aggressive pursuit of trademark violators and those stealing and illegally distributing the studio’s intellectual property.
According to Corbin Fisher Chief Executive Officer Jason Gibson, “This is a significant appointment for Corbin Fisher, and one we are extremely pleased to make and announce. A central element of Mr. Randazza’s role will be to head up our anti-piracy efforts and command the offensive we are preparing to take against those stealing our content: seeking out the infringers and their real identities, initiating legal action against them, pursuing judgments and firmly, loudly and forcefully sending the message that violating our intellectual property rights can and will result in major consequences for the violators.”
Gibson pointed out that Corbin Fisher already employs a sizable team of full-time staff members who actively log infringing activity, record and collect information about violations and violators, preserve evidence and track activity in preparation for legal action to come.
“We already have several particular groups and individuals identified for our first round of federal lawsuits, and Marc is eager to move forward with these actions,” Gibson said.
Added Randazza, “Corbin Fisher puts a lot of effort and resources in to producing high quality content, and when others steal that content, they may as well have broken into our homes and stolen our possessions. I look forward to hunting down those who think that they can steal our content and bringing them to justice.”
The studio plans to partner with other producers on some of the legal efforts, according to Chief Operating Officer Brian Dunlap.
“While we are actively moving forward on several lawsuits on our own, we acknowledge and firmly believe that copyright infringement and content theft are matters affecting all producers and their employees, and thus we are partnering with some to go after these criminals,” he said. “We welcome any company willing to join us in and contribute to these efforts.”
In addition, the studio anticipates donating part of Randazza’s time, energy and expertise for pro bono work on selected First Amendment-related cases and issues the company feels are worthwhile.
“I am impressed by Corbin Fisher’s commitment to matters beyond their own bottom line and look forward to being part of their efforts to help others,” Randazza said.
Randazza possesses seven years of practical litigation experience in First Amendment, intellectual property, trademark and other relevant media law. He is a former professor of trademark, entertainment, First Amendment and copyright law and holds a juris doctorate from Georgetown University as well as a masters degree in mass communication from the University of Florida. Randazza has authored numerous articles about media law; has appeared frequently on radio and television as an expert commentator about media and internet matters, and is a frequent speaker at legal conferences in his areas of expertise. He is a member of the First Amendment Lawyers Association, the International Trademark Association and the American Civil Liberties Union.
