LOS ANGELES—Mattel, the toy giant behind Barbie dolls, has apologized after printing the web address to an adult studio on the back of Barbie doll boxes promoting the upcoming major motion picture Wicked, starring Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo and Jeff Goldblum, among others.
The movie is a film adaptation of the popular Broadway show based on L. Frank Baum's universally acclaimed literary works.
Multiple news reports and tabloids have circulated a now-viral image of the back of the Barbie box promoting Universal Pictures' upcoming November 22 theatrical release. However, instead of printing www.WickedMovie.com on the back of the Barbie doll boxes, the company printed www.Wicked.com, which is the web address for the legacy adult studio.
A spokesperson for Mattel told multiple outlets that the company was "made aware of a misprint on the packaging of the Mattel Wicked collection dolls,” adding, “We deeply regret this unfortunate error and are taking immediate action to remedy this."
