Cortana Blue, a top cam girl who says that she earns up to $750 per night on camera, is the focus of an lengthy profile published Tuesday by the online magazine VICE, an article focusing on how the Toronto-based cammer is making the unusual leap from online sex work to a music career.
But unlike other former sex workers who have found success in the entertainment industry—perhaps most notably ex-stripper Cardi B—Cortana Blue maintains her two careers simultaneously, leveraging her six-figure online following to boost her aspirations as pop star LAIKA.
“Why would I waste three-hundred-thousand people who already have my account, especially with cam, with people who know me as someone who sits and plays guitar, and sings on cam, why would I make it something completely different?” she said in the VICE profile.
Camming has also provided the financial stimulus for her musical efforts as well. According to VICE, she collected about $22,000 in Snapchat fees and sales of her self-produced porn videos, and turned that money into her first music video.
Perhaps for that reason, she told VICE that she cannot envision any point at which she puts her camming days behind her.
Cardi B and the other, admittedly rare music world figures who have used sex work as a launching pad make a point of leaving their adult industry careers behind as they push their way up the ladder of mainstream fame. But Cortana Blue tells VICE that she wants the two to work together.
“When I go on tour, I will go on stage and be like ‘Y’all can buy my Snapchat for fifty bucks, you can get to see me naked,’” she told the publication “I can only imagine saying that in a room full of people. I wonder how many people will buy my Snapchat.”
At the same time she interprets her growing success in music—with about 100,000 streams of her debut single “Earl Grey,” according to VICE—as confirmation that her camming career has served her pop career well.
“If people only cared about me being naked I would have no streams. So it's clearly like, people embracing the fact I can do both, and why not?”
