The Hollywood Reporter Examines Vivid’s Business Model

LOS ANGELESHollywood trade journal, The Hollywood Reporter, posted an extensive piece on its website last Friday on the business prospects of Vivid Entertainment and how the company has remained successful in the face of increased competition, piracy and a down economy.

While the company traces its roots back to 1984, The Hollywood Reporter piece picks up the story with Vivid distributing the infamous Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee sex tape in 1998, as the event that truly put the company on the map. The video eventually was pulled from the marketplace, but not before selling an untold number of units.

The piece accurately points out that the studio has continued to mine the celebrity sex tape niche successfully with the release of videos starring Playboy Playmate Kendra Wilkinson and Laurence Fishburne’s offspring, Montana Fishburne, this year. The two releases are among the best selling adult videos this year.

Citing company co-chairman Steven Hirsch as a “leader in the mainstreaming of porn,” the piece, written by Georg Szalai, describes how Vivid’s stayed ahead of the curve with not just celebrity porn, but with extending his brand on condoms, sex toys, through the Vivid Girls and by producing high-quality fare people want to watch.

Also highlighted is the new direction Vivid has taken with superhero parody porn, most notably with Batman XXX: A Porn Parody, and now with Superman XXX: A Porn Parody, a direction that has expanded the company’s fan base to include fans of pop culture and comic books.
