CHATSWORTH, Calif.—Hard as it may be to believe, that time of year has arrived: AVN Media Network is now accepting pre-nominations for the 2018 AVN Awards.
To pre-nom something in any category, adult industry professionals must request access to the restricted pre-nom website here in order to submit their movies, products, outlets and other entities for awards consideration. Those who have registered in the past to submit pre-noms for previous years must re-register for the 2018 Awards.
The pre-nom website will remain open until midnight on Sept. 30, 2017, which is also the eligibility deadline for 2018 Awards consideration. AVN also opened pre-nominations today for the returning GayVN Awards; for information on that, click here.
The 2018 AVN Awards Show is scheduled for Saturday, January 27, at The Joint inside Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. Angela White and Harli Lotts will co-host the 35th annual ceremony.
This year, for the first time, content released exclusively on membership sites will be eligible for AVN Awards consideration in any applicable sex scene category. Previous to now, only content in the categories of Best Boy/Girl Sex Scene, Best Girl/Girl Sex Scene, Best Oral Sex Scene, Best Anal Sex Scene and Best Virtual Reality Sex Scene was considered from online-only platforms. For the 2018 AVN Awards, web scenes in any existing AVN Awards sex scene category will be considered, provided they meet the eligibility requirements (see further details below).
AVN has also added two new categories for 2018 in the Web & Technology arena.
The first new category is Best New Website, to recognize the most notable online adult entertainment destinations launched between Oct. 1, 2016 and Sept. 30, 2017.
The second addition is Best Clip Website, which will honor online portals that have enjoyed a boom in popularity of late through which independently produced adult clips are sold directly to consumers.
In addition, a number of revisions have been made in the Video category realm, most significantly in those categories pertaining to fetish/specialty fare. What were formerly known by the admittedly clunky monikers of Best Specialty Movie - Other Genre and Best Specialty Series - Other Genre have been renamed Best Niche Movie and Series. In following, AVN has introduced the talent category of Niche Performer of the Year, to honor men and women who appear primarily in fetish-themed productions, including those in the BBW, BDSM, mature and other specialized genres.
Finally, in an effort to help industry members properly navigate our pre-nom site, AVN produced a how-to video that breaks it all down to make it easy for even the most tech-challenged Luddites in the Pornosphere to handle. That video is available to view here.

Eligibility Period
To be considered in any of the video categories a title or scene must have been made available commercially during the eligibility period, which runs from October 1, 2016, to September 30, 2017. If a sex scene is released as both a standalone web scene and as part of a movie released on DVD or VOD, the scene will by default be considered part of the movie. For consideration in all other categories, a movie must be released in its entirety by September 30, 2017. Any scene considered for a 2018 AVN Award will be void from consideration in all future years if included as part of any movie released after September 30, 2017.
DVD/VOD Eligibility
To be considered for a nomination, movies released via DVD/VOD must either fit AVN’s traditional distribution requirements of being stocked with five wholesale distributors and/or 100 retail outlets (on DVD), or be made available for VOD download and/or streaming as follows:
• Must be available through a minimum of two (2) major for-pay VOD providers, defined as ones carrying movies from at least 100 active labels/studios.
• Must have clearly marked post dates within the eligibility period across all qualifying VOD platforms carrying it.
• Companies wishing to submit VOD-only titles for consideration must provide links showing that said titles meet the above requirements.
Standalone Web Scene Eligibility
To be considered for nomination in an applicable sex scene category, scenes must be released on a site that has members who are paying a monthly fee to access the site’s content. As with producers of content that is distributed on DVD and VOD, membership sites must also maintain 2257 records. Scenes released through clip stores are not eligible.
