NEW YORK CITY—HBO's The Deuce has just begun its second season, now set in the late 1970s/early '80s, and xHamster has created an interactive map to 1977 Times Square, featuring the theaters, live shows and bookstores that made Times Square—as well as the Bronx, Queens and Brooklyn—so wonderfully sexy.
The embeddable map locates more than fifty theaters, gay and straight, with photos, ads, historical details and information about their eventual fate. The team at xHamster pulled information from source as diverse as The New York Times archives and sites like Vanishing New York, as well as old copies of Playboy and Screw.
"Times Square in the 1970s was an analog version of online porn today," assessed Alex Hawkins, Vice President of xHamster. "You had nearly limitless options, and a community of like-minded fans. We're indebted to those who came before us, and took risks to develop the industry that exists today. We wanted to excavate today's Disneyfied Times Square, to show the world that existed and thrived four decades ago."
The interactive map is available on xHamster's blog.
