Sasha Grey Gets Pulled Back Into Reading-to-Kids Scandal

LOS ANGELES—It’s hard to feel sorry for Sasha Grey, who seems to be handling the transition from porn star to mainstream celebrity with just the right amount of aplomb, but these days she also has to feel a little bit like Michael Corleone in Godfather III, who famously complained that as much as he tried to get out of the “family business,” the business kept pulling him back in.

That problem holds doubly true for Grey these days: not only can she not escape the “pornographic film star” label, which was used only today by the Huffington Post to describe the Girlfriend Experience and Entourage star, but she also has been pulled back into the reading scandal that was set off last November after she read to a group of school kids at Emerson Elementary School in Compton, Calif.

Making matters worse, the current brouhaha was instigated apparently without Grey’s knowledge by a new studio called Assence Films, which is releasing a movie this week called Anal Artists that just happens to include a previously shot scene with Grey. To add a little punch to the movie’s promotion, the studio said it would donate a portion of the film's proceeds to the National Education Association's Read Across America program, which is the same program that either was or was not involved with Grey’s Compton fiasco. Grey has said she read with the program’s blessing, but the program asserts otherwise.

RAA responded today to the offer and the alleged Grey connection, telling HuffPo in no uncertain terms, “Sasha Grey is not affiliated with the National Education Association’s Read Across America program nor has she been invited or endorsed by NEA to read at any of the association’s Read Across America Day events, and NEA will not accept any proceeds from her latest, or any of her films.”

Take that, Steven Soderbergh!
