Roy Karch loves a good laugh. He should know, having shot a number of movies parodying mainstream movies.
“I was one of the originals of doing that,” said Karch, during a break from shooting his latest movie, Sex Z Pictures’ America’s Next Top Porn Model at the Entertainium Studios, near downtown Los Angeles.
“I did that James Bond spoof, For Your Mouth Only, Crocodile Blondie Part 2 and stuff like that and it’s always fun to do."
And Sex Z Pictures owner Bo Kenney agreed, hiring Karch to do what he does best – make a hardcore movie that sells.
Poking fun at UPN’s “America’s Next Top Model,” the movie, set for release in June, manages a few laughs amid a slew of hot sex scenes that includes an anal scene, a double penetration, some girl-on-girl action and intense boy-girl scenes.
Looking a little grayer than when he joined the business more than 30 years ago, Karch says he still manages to have fun during his shoots, he says as 19-year-old Tyra Banxxx gets the once over from the make up girl a few feet away.
It’s not exactly UPN’s hit show, starring Victoria’s Secret model Tyra Banks, but perhaps the next best thing, Karch likes to say.
“It’s just like it. Except for the fucking,” he says with a snicker.
As he says this, a crew member says they’re ready. Banxxx looks at Karch as she sits at a table surrounded by the movie’s final contestants, played by Naomi, Adriana Nicole and Crissy Cums.
Banxxx says she’s ready then Karch shouts “Action!” only to yell cut several times in the next few minutes.
Dialogue and porn don’t really go together, he’d later say. But for now, Banxxx feels the heat as she struggles to say her unwieldy lines.
“Fucking is a lot easier,” she says, getting a smile from those within earshot.
Less than an hour later, she would prove herself right as she easily mounted Billy Glide in reverse cowgirl fashion and rode his large member through one of the movie’s hottest scenes.
Few words were spoken, but then again, few were necessary. Banxxx’s moans spoke volumes as she shifted positions before cumming hard over her man.
“I really like working with him,” she later says.
Understandably, Karch agrees. His young starlet has the look of the real Tyra Banks and the hot body that makes her the center of attention when it comes to her scenes.
“She really carries this off,” Karch says. “It’s a lot like the show, but it’s more fun and she really is Tyra as far as I’m concerned.”
For Banxxx, who takes a cigarette break in between scenes, doing the movie brings back memories of last fall when she appeared on the Banks’ talk show. During the program, the supermodel went off on the young starlet for using a variation of her name, demanding she stop using it and then badgering her into leaving the industry.
“They told me Tyra wanted to meet me and that she wasn’t angry about my name, so I said, ‘OK, I’ll go on the show.’ But when I did, she started off with all this crap. It was really upsetting,” she says as she takes a puff.
“But I’m over it now. I love this business and I’m not going leave it and I’m not going to change my name.”
Having produced his share of spoof movies like Funky Brewster, and Cagney & Stacey, Karch says he still likes the idea of making a funny feature with lots of hardcore sex.
“People aren’t going to watch because it’s funny. They’re going to watch because of the sex and then they’ll laugh because of the humor,” he says.
A throwback to the days when adult movies were story-driven features, Karch takes a break as he reminisces about what it meant to be a porn star in the mid-70s.
“Back in those days, a porn star walked in wearing nice shoes, nice hair, with painted nails, painted toe nails and dressed to the nines, but now a girl comes in a cutoff top, cutoff shorts and calls herself a porn star. It’s a whole new era now,” he says.
“But features are still where it’s at. Just look at Pirates,” he says of the successful Digital Playground/Adam & Eve release last fall.
For adult performer Harmony, who plays a past winner on the fictitious show, doing features is a break from her usual work in gonzo movies.
“I enjoy doing both, but sometimes it’s good to do a feature and do a part,” says the 22-year-old blonde.
“But it’s all fun to me. I like getting fucked.”
Moments later, Harmony and Cums were all over each other in a loud girl-on-girl scene as Karch had it planned.
Moving on past a group of scantily clad girls walking into the changing room, Karch manages a smile as he continues to the next set up.
“It’s all about the girls,” he says. “I’m tellin’ ya. It’s all about them.”
