NEW YORK - The once-taboo topics of porn and sex addiction are more visible than ever in America's mainstream pop culture, according to a report in the New York Daily News.
The Daily News pointed to actor David Duchovny's real-life treatment for sex addiction as "an indication that certain foibles have now gone public." Duchovny stars as a sex-addicted writer in the Showtime series "Californication."
The article cited several current movies and TV shows as further evidence of the increased tolerance for kink in pop culture, including Kevin Smith's Zack and Miri Make a Porno, the movie adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk's novel Choke, and the new WE Channel series "Secret Lives of Women: Sex Addicts."
"Porn has entered the mature years," AVN founder Paul Fishbein told the Daily News. "It's no longer naughty, underground. It's an up-front, in-your-face business, as much a part of the pop culture as anything else. We're in a different phase of our pop culture. Kids today have access to material that we didn't when we were kids. It's more normal, when a kid turns 18, to have that access to sexual material."
