Q&A: Angela White Discusses Making of 'Angela Volume Three'

LOS ANGELES—When Australian star Angela White moved from her native country to the San Fernando Valley a year ago, she didn’t know quite what to expect.

But once word got around about her coming to America full time with the Spiegler Girls agency, the bookings came early and often taking her well into November.

It turns out she was just warming up.

White carried that momentum into 2017, racking up dozens of sex scenes, landing feature roles and receiving coveted titles such as Girlsway Girl of the Month in April and Vixen Angel in June. Then in July she raised the stakes again, revealing she would be co-hosting the 2018 AVN Awards Show in January with Harli Lotts.

“Being here, being embraced by the community and being booked for a wide variety of things has been a really amazing experience,” White told AVN.

Somehow in between working for other studios the versatile performer/producer also managed to direct and star in four new showcases for her own production company, AGW Entertainment, en route to what has become a career year that’s about as good as it gets in adult entertainment.

Today, however, marks a special moment for White & Co. as her latest movie, Angela Volume Three, hits the streets from Girlfriends Films Distribution. Even though she considered Volume Two of her signature series last year her “magnum opus” and didn’t know how she could go bigger, White said this week without hesitation that she did.

She points to the evidence all over Angela Volume Three, which features her going all in on a remarkable set of sexual encounters in which she executes double anal, double vaginal and triple penetration, throws down for her first interracial gangbang, an anal scene with Mandingo and her first creampie—with five-time AVN Male Performer of the Year Manuel Ferrara. The momentous title is the 12th movie from AGW since it launched in October 2014—and the studio already has accounted for five AVN Awards.

In this exclusive interview, White discusses what makes Angela Volume Three her finest work to date, her eventful first year in LA and her first published academic piece that appears in the new university textbook, The Routledge Companion to Media, Sex and Sexuality.

AVN: We heard your store signing with Abella Danger and Ron Jeremy for Castle Megastore’s 30th anniversary on September 15th in Phoenix was packed—how did it go?

AW: There were 2700 people who came through the doors. It’s a big store and the line was wrapping through the store and then out the door and around Castle. … We were supposed to sign until 10 p.m. and we were still there at half past midnight. It was an amazing turnout.

There were a lot of couples, a lot of women and some fans that drove 300 miles to get there. One fan came with Australian goodies; he bought me Caramello Koalas Australian chocolate. That was really nice. He must’ve known that was one of my weaknesses. It’s nice to meet fans who are so generous that obviously have been touched by your product so much that they want to give back to you.

How does it feel to top what you previously thought was your best movie so far with Angela Volume Three?

It’s obviously a great feeling. It’s hard for me to even describe it. I was honest when I said I didn’t think that I could top Angela Two, how could I? It was my best work to date. And that feels great, that there’s nothing stagnant. I feel like I’m changed from this movie. I feel like I know that I can unlock certain parts of myself emotionally during scenes that I didn’t think was possible. So that makes me feel very happy, very proud, very excited for fans to see it as well because I think that it’s rare that you can create a movie that makes you feel so vulnerable but at the same time so empowered.

You mentioned your scene with Manuel is “the most hardcore” you’ve ever done—even though it’s only a creampie—and that you “moved away from the physical and delved into the emotional” in it. Do you recall ever doing that before?

There’s definitely been times when I’ve done scenes and I felt emotionally connected with somebody, but not to that level. Not to the point where I feel like—I couldn’t disconnect. I couldn’t just go, “OK this was a scene.” And you’ll see when you watch the scene. The scene is an hour and 10 minutes, no cuts. And at the end of the scene we keep filming after the sex is finished and we’re cuddling and you watch me and I can’t let go. I can’t stop cuddling him. We try, we try to separate ourselves and start talking and I just can’t. And it’s only when Manuel hands me a baby wipe when I can finally go, OK, it’s a porn scene. It was that baby-wipe moment when you’re wiping it all off. But even then and even after that baby-wipe moment I’m still struggling, I’m trying to convince myself this was a scene, come out of it, back to reality.

How did your first IR gangbang come about?

Fans have been requesting me to do an interracial gangbang for a long time, especially after I had already done my first gangbang. And of course I wanted to do one as well. So I chose who I believe are some of the best black male talent for gangbangs. Certain guys are better one on one and certain guys are better for group sex scenes. So it’s Prince Yahshua, Rico Strong, Isiah Maxwell, Rob Piper and JonJon. So that was incredible. I think all of those guys get along; it was a great vibe. Great intensity as well. There were no lulls in the scene; there was always something happening and always a lot of energy. For me in a gangbang that is always what I want to see is a continuous flow of action and energy. A lot of DP action, a lot of airtight action, a lot of blow-bang kind of stuff at the beginning and then at the end before the cumshot. It was awesome.

For me when I’m directing gangbangs they’re all about being in control of everything but then being like, OK I know I’m in control which means I know I can do whatever I want and cut if I need to, but also because I have that complete power it allows me to just let go and be like, “Let’s do it. Do what you want to me.”

Does that moment come before the scene starts or after?

I think there’s always like a warm-up period in a scene. Obviously with those guys I had worked with all of them separately in a scene before. So I did know them, but your connection one-on-one is always different to when there are more bodies, more people. And gangbangs are interesting because it’s less that one individual is fucking you. It’s more that those five guys become one guy—it’s a whole other beast. I would say that pretty early on I start to let go and especially with gonzo scenes it’s very early on that I let go because whenever’s there’s a script it takes me a little while to figure out where my character is in their headspace as they’re fucking. And depending on whether I need to keep character during the sex obviously I don’t have the same type of opportunities to let go as I do when I’m being Angela White in a gonzo scene and I can do whatever I want. I can just feel and experience.

Because it’s so overwhelming as well, you very quickly realize wow, as soon as you get on your knees and you look up and there’s five big guys standing over you. And you’re like—this is happening. This is really happening. So you really quickly accept being overwhelmed and having that experience. That for me is the thing about the gangbang, is being overwhelmed. It’s a really powerful feeling to have. There’s a sexual element to it. It’s erotic just to give up control and have other people take over your body and do things to your body, obviously with prior consent and everything. At a certain point you trust the people that you’ve booked to use you, to take you, to control you in ways that are going to give you pleasure.

How does it work with who gets to have sex with you first?

It’s organic. … These guys are professional gangbangers. They’ve all done gangbangs before, and a lot of times they know who wants to do what and at what point; and there’s certain guys who are designated anchors who are great on the bottom that are strong enough to hold the girl in certain positions and certain positions some guys can’t do for whatever reason like the length of their limbs or the length of their cock or whatever. They all know what’s possible with each other and all I say is “make sure you share me.” That’s all I say—make sure that everybody gets a turn, everybody’s involved. That’s really for any group scene. When I do my Threesomes movie my thing is always “no one gets left out.”

You mentioned in your BTS interview on the DVD that Mandingo was very sensual. How did he convey that sensuality in the scene?

I always have a discussion with people before I have sex with them. So even from the first discussion beforehand I always ask, “What do you like and what do you dislike?” Because I want to know before a scene if anybody has any hard "no's." And also if there’s like a particular thing that’s really going to get them off I want to know about it. Because sometimes it’s a very subtle thing that you might not know. Like touch me right here. I want to know these things before the scene so everybody gets the most pleasure. One of the things he said was, “I’m not really a choker or a slapper.” So I was like OK. He said, “I’m more about just getting the girl off.” He verbally already communicated that before the scene and then during the scene I could see he’s very aware of what he’s doing. Obviously he has a very large appendage so he’s very careful and gentle.

… I could see he was a sensual guy from the moment he started fucking me. He pays a lot of attention; he’s very present. He’s always looking at you kind of seeing what you like and listening to your moans. When he sees I’m having pleasure you can hear him having more pleasure; you can hear his moans. … I think that was interesting because so many people have marketed him as a monster—“monster cock!” Clearly, he does have a monster cock but the person behind that cock is very sensitive, very sensual. He’s a lover.

When did it click that I want do anal with Mandingo, not just boy/girl?

If I’m going to do it I want to do it all. The Angela series has always been about doing firsts and pushing my limits and seeing what I’m capable of. And so I wanted to see OK, can I do Mandingo anally? Actually, sometimes it’s easier to do really big cocks anally. Because I’m quite short—people think that I’m tall in my photos but I’m short—and so the length of my vaginal cavity is actually quite short because you start hitting my cervix at a certain point, whereas in the butt there’s no cervix to hit. So I can actually take a lot more girth and a lot more length in my butt than I can in my pussy. So depending on the cock it actually is more pleasurable in my butt.

I was kind of thinking well Mandingo is really long, maybe butt sex would actually be good with him because with my pussy at some point he can’t go all the way in. He’s going to have to stop or he’s going to hit my cervix which is going to be uncomfortable for everybody.

And he was so gentle with it—when he first put it in my ass we didn’t even stop for lube. He was that gentle. And I think because he relaxed me so much because we have vaginal sex first which just relaxed me so much with those orgasms that he just slid right in.

Let’s talk about your DP with Mick Blue and Markus Dupree. What do you think makes that duo one of the best DP teams going right now?

They are on the same page. It’s all teamwork for them. So they are definitely a team. There’s no kind of jealously; there’s no trying to hog the girl or move them in a different way. Because there’s been scenes where—and I’m not just talking about group scenes with guys—where you’re doing one thing and someone will drag you off somewhere else. It’s like there’s a competitiveness to it. All they have to do is look at each other and they know where they’re going to transition next. So being in a DP with them is an experience; you’re along for a ride.

They know what they’re going to do beforehand; they know how they’re going to do it. They know at what point. They look at each other and then suddenly you transition into a whole other position just seamlessly. There are none of those awkward moments like oh my knee’s in the wrong place. They just put you where they want you and it’s quite amazing to be on that ride.

There are a lot of great teams… but for me they’re a standout when it comes to DP’s. There’s no competitiveness, their being on the same page, the fact that they get into a groove with each other. So they do the thrusting together and then they do this oppositional thrusting, which is just incredible.

What about your second gangbang in the movie—with Mick, Markus, Toni Ribas, John Strong and Xander Corvus?

It was amazing. Again it was guys I already worked with and I had a good connection with all of them. It was just magic when they come together and they all mesh well together, so it’s another example of just having a great vibe on set and it was a fun vibe. It kind of went through ebbs and flows of like joking around to serious fucking. I think sex should be fun and gangbangs should be fun. You shouldn’t take yourself too seriously.

It was a really fun experience and a very sexually amazing experience. And we did double anal again, double vag and we did a lot of triple penetration. I did do triple penetration in Angela Volume Two but I did a lot more in Angela Volume Three. And a lot more of the double anal and one in the pussy, whereas I think Angela Volume Two was a lot of double vag with one in the butt. It’s a very intense, filled feeling when you have that much in your butt and then obviously when the cock comes in your pussy you can kind of feel it rubbing together. I can’t really think of another sensation that would best compare to that. It’s almost like a sexual feat. And it’s almost like you feel proud that you can do this thing.

How did you get into the doubles and triples, was that something that was just organic?

Well I’ve had more experience with the doubles now so I knew I could do that. Even though I had done triples before you never know if your body’s going to accept that on the day. And also it depends on the size of the cocks and the length of the cocks and how the guys are feeling.

So when I directed that I told them I want to get a lot of great DP action and then doubles and right at the end we’ll try for triples. Because if you try for something in a scene that doesn’t work it can sometimes affect people’s morale. It can be frustrating if you try something and you keep trying and people are slipping out. … So I was like, “Let’s do a great scene. Let’s get all the footage we need and then we’ll try for the triples and if doesn’t work, it’s OK. I already have the scene; we already had fun. It won’t affect the morale we just won’t include and if it works, great.”

And that’s what we did. It’s a lot more work for the guys in the triples because really my job is to stay still. I can’t do anything. I can’t push back on the cock or twerk on the cock or even fuck them back because if I move at all I could have them slip out. So really my job in that instance is to get into position and stay still. Sometimes I’m like “Hold me down, hold me down on the dick, make me take it!” It’s a physical challenge that I want.

Honestly they’re really getting into positions that are quite amazing, quite athletic. One on top of the other and coming in from the side and keeping their dicks hard on top of all this. It’s really amazing. It’s a testament to how great they are as performers that they can do acts like that.

Even if they were getting into those positions without a boner it would be hard…I think you have to be into gangbangs to stay hard in a gangbang. Otherwise they wouldn’t be able to mentally maintain an erection. When they kind of do the monkey and they come over the top and they’re fucking the ass down like that and having to push their cock down their quads must be on fire.

When you think about 12 movies in the past three years since AGW launched, what comes to mind?

I’m definitely very proud of what I’ve been able to achieve. I’m proud of how much I’ve grown. I definitely see my growth as a performer but also as a producer and director. I definitely feel like I’ve honed in an Angela White look for my DVDs, for my box covers, even the way the sex is shot and the teases are shot. I think that the more DVDs we’ve produced the more I’ve shot specifically for DVD as well. … If you watch from the first movie to this movie you’ll see that honing in on my specific style and you’ll see me progressing as a performer as well and me being able to let go more and being able to be more confident in myself.

I think it’s been a really positive thing for me to produce my own content and particularly to edit my own content as well. Editing makes me a much better director and a much better performer.

… I have to say that I couldn’t have done this without so many other amazing people. I know it’s AngelaWhite.com and I know they’re my movies but it’s not just me. I have amazing crews that help me. Obviously I’ve worked with a number of different crews. For my gonzo stuff Chris Streams has been amazing for my recent movies. Everybody that I’ve had on set from my PA’s to my makeup artists, to the talent, obviously. Without the other talent, without their willingness to come to my set and to give their all there’s no way I could produce the product that I do so I’m very grateful to everybody who’s helped me along the way. It’s pretty incredible. Especially being here now and living in the States having come from a small little town in Australia all the way to Los Angeles. And being able to live here and immersed in the culture and create real valuable friendships with people in this community that are really sex positive with the same mindset as me has been incredible—an incredible journey.

When you reflect on the rest of your year, what stands out?

It’s gone very quickly because I’ve been working so much. It also does feel significant because I’ve been able to achieve so much. I’ve been really overwhelmed and grateful that I’ve been welcomed with open arms and so many amazing companies have wanted to shoot me.

I had the honor of being the June Vixen Angel and also had the honor of being the Girlsway Girl of the Month for April. And hosting the XRCO Awards [in April] was a huge honor and being asked to host AVN was just incredible. I still can’t believe that’s real. And I’ve shot lots of amazing content. In the last 12 months I’ve shot 183 scenes—40 anal scenes. I’ve done seven double-penetration scenes. I’ve done two gangbangs and I’ve had five showcase movies.

I’ve had the Titwoman that’s about to come out through Elegant Angel and I’ve had four of my own showcases with Angela Loves Women Volume Three, Angela Loves Threesomes Volume Two, Angela Loves Anal and now Angela Volume Three. And then I’ve just been part of a lot of really cool projects. Some of the things are really new to me like doing a lot of the feature work.

And I’m in Vampires, Girlsway’s big feature that’s about to come out. That was really cool to be a part of. Working for [Greg Lansky] in any capacity is always amazing; his sets are fantastic. All of the shoots I’ve done for Lansky and the amazing Vixen Angel shoot. And then working for directors that I’ve really looked up to and I’ve really admired like John Stagliano—that was amazing to shoot with him twice this year. He’s really just a legend in the industry and he doesn’t shoot features that often, so to be part of the feature Psychotic Behavior was really amazing. And then I also did the Anal & Oral Antics. Which was great and after that scene that we shot which was over two hours long—just a solo scene—one of my proudest moments was when he told me that I was a true pervert. Coming from John Stagliano, who I think is one of the most perverted people in the industry, and I mean that in a complimentary way. I was like that makes me feel amazing. I’m going to wear that as a badge of honor. It’s been a massive year.

How did updating your honors thesis in Australia become a chapter in a college textbook from Routledge?

It’s a university textbook for undergraduate and Master’s students. My chapter is based upon the research that I conducted for my thesis. It’s about the porn industry, but it’s qualitative research on the female performers’ experiences in the Australian pornography industry. This isn’t based on my own experiences though. It’s based on the interviews and narratives I did with other female performers. … I want to be doing research again in the future and that’s where I want to be doing it.

This was supposed to be published last year in August. I’m really happy for it finally to be out and it’s really my first academic piece that’s been published. That’s really exciting. And it’s exciting as well because a lot of fans have been asking me, “Can I read your research?” Because when I have mentioned it in interviews I haven’t been able to show anyone because I knew it was going to be published and obviously they don’t want you putting it online before it’s in the book.

It’s a little theory dense… But I think people will find it interesting. It really touches on the ways that performing in pornography can be transformative for the people involved. … But in fact it can be much more than that to many people. It can be much more than that to the viewers; it can change their lives. It can make them feel validated that their sexuality is something they can be proud of and they shouldn’t feel ashamed of. It can be validating for people who haven’t seen their sexual kink or their sexual proclivities represented on film or in the media. And for them to see that on film and see other people doing that makes them feel that their desires are not wrong.
