Joanna Angel Featured on Business Insider

LOS ANGELES—BurningAngel Entertainment co-founder Joanna Angel is the subject of a profile today on

The article details the formation of the alt-porn website in Angel's Rutgers University dorm room to its continued success 11 years later.

"We just came up with the name. It had a good girl/bad girl thing going, so we liked it," she told Business Insider recently. "Initially I thought of being a journalist, possibly a sex advice column type person kind of like a Carrie Bradshaw. I also had this odd dream to teach English classes to people in prison. Burning Angel was a very small experiment at first. I never imagined it would become my career."

What started a small entrepreneurial startup now employs 10 people, and Angel and her company have gone on to win many adult industry awards. The article also points out that is more than just a porn website, it's a community, with live events and active forums.

The business of BurningAngel extends from its membership website to DVDs and sex toys, branded merchandise and live events. Though porn revenues are down and a dollar has to stretch further than ever, Angel is still focused on growing her brand.

"Porn is definitely tough," she said, "but this is my career and this is what I do. We want to expand the brand and do even more with it. At this point, we've been around for a while. But we're still growing because we're still a small business."
