Iraqi Theater Blown Up For Showing Porn

Yesterday two people were killed and 20 were injured in Mosul, the second largest city in Iraq, when a hand grenade was thrown into a movie theater that was showing porn.

Approximately 200 people were inside the theater. All of the casualties were young men. There were posters of German and Italian porn inside. No arrests have been made.

Last Sunday, 10 Iraqis were injured in a grenade attack against a shop selling porn near Mosul.

The religious right of Iraq have taken a hard stance against adult entertainment and other vices of the Western world that have been introduced in Iraq since the war. Owners of theaters that show showing adult movies have been threatened, and in some towns there have been attacks on distilleries and stores selling western fashions for women.

Women are not allowed inside theaters that show adult movies. There is a theoretical age limit, but the AFP has reported that it's enforcement is rare.

In Iraq, the trend is for movie theaters to show both adult and mainstream movies.

During Saddam Hussein’s reign, censorship was strictly enforced and foreign movies were not allowed into the country.
